Top three places to visit in San Francisco’s Chinatown?

Question by erinaquarius: Top three places to visit in San Francisco’s Chinatown?
I have a cousin visiting from Ohio next month (Feb. 2nd), and would like to show him the sites in Chinatown. Any recommendations for reasonably priced dim sum restaurants, “must-see” shops or attractions, etc.? Also, what are our parking options in that area? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Bruce T
Though there is free parking on Sundays, supposedly one of the signs that a person is crazy is bringing a car to SF. You can park in a parking garage for a fee (most ppl do this). Stockton Street is mostly Chinese speaking businesses and “authentic” Chinese restaurants where ppl from China and HK go. The ppl here are really Chinese (not Chinese-Americans from Kansas whom Chinese from China consider to be American and not really Chinese). You can get real bargains on fresh fruits on Stockton St. and you don’t have to buy a lot (bananas for example are sold by weight and you can buy just a couple). Grant Avenue is more geared to tourists, but don’t miss Grant Avenue. You can get cheap postcards (8 for $ 1) and they are the same as postcards from more expensive stores. You can also get good deals on SF t-shirts and other souvenirs. North Beach, right next to Chinatown, is worth a look and there are plenty of Italian bakeries and restaurants.

Is winter a bad time to visit New York for the first time?

Question by The Coach: Is winter a bad time to visit New York for the first time?
I’m a 39 year old California native and I have never been to NYC. It’s my New Years resolution to visit NYC in 2009 but should I wait until spring or summer? I hear its not so enjoyable in the winter. I just want to make sure I get the most out of my trip in case I dont get to visit NYC again. Any advice?

Go anywhere in DC except on the east side of the city. Stay in the area west of the Capitol Building and check out all the monuments and even check out some of the places in Northern Virginia like the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. It’s so much to see in DC and then there are places you’d rather not see.

Last year I was in Washington DC to visit our capitol. MANY of the locals were obese. Do those people realiz?

Question by : Last year I was in Washington DC to visit our capitol. MANY of the locals were obese. Do those people realiz?
Under Obamsacare, they will either be taxed out of existence, or die because they will not be treated?
Tay, with his plan they will either be taxed by the government food police for eating all that sugary stuff or they will not be treated because they have not eaten healthy.

OR, do you think they will change their eating habits?

Best answer:

Answer by Tay
Wow I had no idea there was a tax for that. I think it’s a wonderful idea. However, not treating them when they develop an illness is just cruel. If I was obese I would definitely change my eating habits because it would be stupid not to. I think they do realize that, but most people who are obese or morbidly obese have just given up on losing weight. It’s hard, but it isn’t impossible. They should keep trying and find a way. If they are paying thousands of dollars for all that food, they can obviously afford liposuction.

Some of my favourite places and attractions:

- California Academy of Science (and the Golden Gate Park in general). If you’re an art lover, the De Young Museum.

- Pier 39 and Ghiradelli Square. Touristy, but fun! There’s a ferry you can get from pier 39 that goes under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz, and gives you a ton of information about SF’s history as well.

- The Ferry Building – go on Tuesdays or Saturdays between 10 and 2 for amazing farmer’s markets. And if you find the stall that sells almond brittle, BUY SOME. It’s amaziiiiing…

- The Mission district – funky shops and things to see. Make sure you check out Paxton Gate and the pirate shop 826 Valencia (they’re next door to each other).

- Ride the cable cars at least once. I like the Powell and Hyde line the best (it takes you straight to Ghiradelli Square), but it tends to fill up fast!

- Chinatown. Wander around and boggle at some of the food on sale!

- Day trips! Heading outside of SF can be fun, too. I like getting the ferry across to Sausalito, maybe including a quick trip up to the Muir Woods.
