San Francisco: If you had only one day to visit, what would you do?

Question by spike_is_my_evil_vampire: San Francisco: If you had only one day to visit, what would you do?
I am visiting a friend there in a couple weeks and want to know what’s recommended and what to skip! Should I do Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Fisherman’s Wharf, etc? What do you recommend? What should I stay away from? I’m a fun-loving girl who’s open minded for anything cool!
I’m actually visiting for 3 days but will go to San Jose one day, the beach one day and San Francisco the next so.. I just want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything!

Want to visit Washington DC in April 2010?

Question by semper_fi_brother: Want to visit Washington DC in April 2010?
Not only do I want to visit the all the obvious attractions, but one important attraction that is in Quantico, Va, The Marine Corps Museum. I don’t drive, are there tour buses or public transportion that could take to Quantico?

Thank you

Best answer:

Answer by A horse walks into a bar…
Visitors can reach the Museum via public transportation from the Washington, D.C., area via public transportation using either Amtrak or a combination of the regional Metrorail service and local bus lines. The schedule, however, is limited, and several connections are required. The Museum is working with area transportation providers to make it easier in the years ahead. Stay tuned….

Amtrak:
Amtrak offers daily service between Union Station and the town of Quantico. We recommend that you take the first morning train to Quantico and the last afternoon train back to Washington, D.C., to give you time enough to tour the Museum

From the Quantico VRE/Amtrak train station, contact Prince William Yellow Cab at 703-491-2222 or 703-369-2100 to arrange transportation for the short ride (approximately 3 miles) to the Museum.

Amtrak schedules and fare rates from the Washington, D.C., area to the town of Quantico are available on Amtrak’s web site at www.amtrak.com. Additionally, VRE (Virginia Railroad Express) information can be viewed at www.vre.org.

Metrorail & Local Bus:
Visitors may also reach the Museum from the Washington, D.C. area on weekdays only via the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Metrorail service and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s (PRTC) OmniRide/OmniLink local bus service.

Travel from the Washington, D.C., area on the Metrorail’s Blue Line south to the Franconia/Springfield station. At the station, board the Prince William-Metro Direct (OmniRide) Bus to the PRTC Transit Center. At the PRTC, transfer to the Dumfries Route OmniLink Bus. Take the OmniLink Bus southbound to the Fuller Heights and Old Triangle stop (at 7-11 convenience store). Please allow 1-hour total time to reach the Fuller Heights and Old Triangle stop from the Franconia/Springfield Metro stop via bus.

From the 7-11 store, contact Prince William Yellow Cab at 703-491-2222 or 703-369-2100 to arrange transportation for the very short ride. Or, on foot, follow Fuller Heights west to intersection of Fuller Road and Route 1. Cross Fuller Road to the Iwo Jima Memorial Statue. Cross Route 1 to the sidewalk on the western side of highway. Walk south on Route 1 approximately 100 yards to entrance to National Museum of the Marine Corps. Follow the entranceway over the short rise, through the Museum’s parking area and main entrance. Watch for vehicle traffic entering the Museum’s gate from Route 1. Be aware that the distance from the bus stop at Fuller Heights and Old Triangle to Museum is approximately ½ mile, but you will be crossing a busy highway at the light and there are no sidewalks along the Museum’s entrance road itself for a few yards. Part of the walk is uphill.

For complete schedules and fare rates, visit:

* Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metrorail): www.wmata.com
* PRTC OmniRide/OmniLink Bus: www.prtctransit.org

Are there any Startups in San Francisco that let you walk in and visit?

Question by : Are there any Startups in San Francisco that let you walk in and visit?
Are there any Startups in San Francisco that let you walk in and visit/tour the offices?

I am going to San Francisco as a vacation and am wondering if anyone knows of any startups/tech companies that encourage visitors? I am interested in technology and startups and think it would be super cool to visit one as I know they’re all over SF.

Thanks

Answer by SFdude
Unfortunately, there is very little to see. Most of the companies are closed to the public. And if you have seen one low rise suburban office building, you have pretty much seen them all. Intel in Santa Clara is the only one that actually welcomes unannounced visitors. Though be prepared for a barrage of PR about the virtues of a certain company’s chip.

The Tech Museum in San Jose is alright. If you love computers, it does have some fascinating items and exhibits. But it is also rather small and underwhelming compared to the huge museums in San Francisco dedicated to art, maritime history, natural history, etc.

http://www.thetech.org

Stanford University in Palo Alto has one of the best computer science departments around. The grounds are quite nice. There is a Byzantine style church, gardens, and an art museum. Guided tours of the campus are available. Although the focus of the tour isn’t on technology per se.

I am going to Washington DC in March. I have only been once before when I was 17. Now I am taking my daughter and I have told her all about the exciting places to visit. However, it looks like we only have a day to tour the city. What would you consider to be the best places to visit while I am there?

If you could visit any restaurant in Washington DC where would you go?

Question by Matty Boy: If you could visit any restaurant in Washington DC where would you go?
Just needed some info on where people would go in DC thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by MetroGirl
It dependents on my mood. If you want something quick and good, Five Guys or Ben’s Chili Bowl are DC favorites. If you want a restaurant then Founding Farmers is the hot spot for professionals. I also like some of the smaller, ethnic places. Two Amy’s is good for Pizza. I also like Bourbon. But right now it would be a flip between Founding Farmers and Marrakesh Palace.

Question by Katie: Best places in Washington DC to visit? I’m only going to be there for a solid day.?
My bf lives in Jacksonville NC, and we’re driving up to Washington DC and spending the night and touring the next day. What are the must-sees? Is there a website out there that will plan a little itinerary for me? Thanks!

Answer by MarkyP00
Go to “the mall” area. You can view The Capital Building, The White House, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, and even spend a little time in the Smithsonian. They are all within a 2-mile walk along the mall. No bus, no subway needed.
