Any time you visit a city for the first time it is a good idea to borrow or purchase a guide book. The book can give you lots of helpful info on wether, attractions, public transportation and includes maps to help you get around.

Here is my Must Do San Francisco

1. Ride a Cable Car, the only moving historical landmark in the world. Stop off at the Cable Car Barn at Washington and Mason to get a full understanding of this unique form of transportation. Riding the Powell Hyde line will allow you to see Lombard Street the famous crooked street.

2. Visit Alcatraz, this former prison is the most popular destination in San Francisco. The bay cruise to and from the island will give you the opportunity to see the skyline from the water a unique perspective. It is wise to purchase tickets before you arrive as tours are often sold out http://www.alcatrazcruises.com

3. Visit Coit Tower, Beautiful murals inside, impressive bay view from the tower or Pioneer Park at the base. Then descend Telegraph hill via the Filbert Steps on the east side of the park for a unique view of how folks on Telegraph Hill live, more beautiful bay views and the chance to hear and see the famous Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

4. Golden Gate Bridge, not just a feat of engineering, this 1.7 mile span offers incredible views of The City, the bay and the Pacific ocean. Be sure to visit Ft. Point under the bridge for a different view of this San Francisco Icon.

5. Explore Golden Gate Park, this large urban park can consume a whole day. The Japanese Tea Garden, California Academy of Science, the DeYoung Art Muesum, the Arboretum, Bison Paddock, and Paddle boats are all worth a look and watch the sun go down over the Pacific over a drink or dinner at the Beach Chalet.

6. Chinatown, the most densely populated portion of San Francisco offers an abundance of shopping, food and unique architecture found outside of Asia. The best place to buy souvenirs to take home to friends and family.

7. North Beach, traditionally the Italian section of the city which has no beach but abounds in quaint shops, great restaurants and The City’s best coffee options.

8. Civic Center, the largest collection of Beaux Arts buildings in the US. Home to San Francisco City Hall, with a dome larger than the US Capital, the Asian Art Museum and the Modern San Francisco Library with its San Francisco History Room housing an eclectic collection of city artifacts and photographs.

9. Yerba Buena Gardens, this urban park is located near the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of The African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the contemporary Jewish Museum, and the Metreon, it will keep you entertained for hours.

10. Twin Peaks, see The City and the bay spread out at your feet. Especially captivating at night when the lights seem to go on for ever.

Q&A: What are my travel options to get from Union Station Washington DC to IAD with 2 adults and 2 kids under 3?

Question by : What are my travel options to get from Union Station Washington DC to IAD with 2 adults and 2 kids under 3?
Basically, we are arriving by train and need to pick up a car rental at the airport as we are flying out of IAD.

The most cost effective way would be to take the metro from Union Station to L’Enfant Plaza and then take the 5a bus to IAD. Otherwise, a taxi cab will get you there, but at a much higher price!

Standard cost for Travel insurance?

Question by Penny: Standard cost for Travel insurance?
I have been looking at lots of different travel insurance websites are they are all about $ 150 or less.

For my first time overseas to Singapore / Malaysia for 10 days, what travel insurance should i get? just the cheapest one possible starting at about $ AUS60…or spend some more money and get everything covered at about $ AUS150? Would you really use all those extra covers anyway? i am only interested in thief, lost, damage and delay in flights.
Also is it cheaper to go for an independent travel company or go with personal health cover companies?

If anyone has anything about travel insurance, that would be great!

Answer by Kor
the main concern should be medical coverage to foot your medical bills should you fall sick or met an accident overseas. theft, lost, damage and delay in flights should be secondary. imagine being hospitalised in foreign land and unable to go home. the bill can come up to a hefty sum and it is the last thing you want to worry about. get something that covers medical bills up to around $ 500k. a lot of people will say that they don’t need this amount. let me cite you real life example. just about a year ago, fire breakout in a discotheque in bangkok, thailand. one of the singaporean who suffered from a 70% burn used up all the $ 500k coverage before they transfer her back to singapore. this singaporean is a insurance agent herself and we happened to be in the same insurance company then. you probably won’t get to make use of the $ 500k in all the travelling you had and will be having and i bet you will prefer not to use it either. however, you really don’t know when you will ever need it, and this is what insurance is about: preparedness.

Is it faster to take amtrack or the plane from Baltimore to Washington DC? What is approx travel time?

Question by e_shepard: Is it faster to take amtrack or the plane from Baltimore to Washington DC? What is approx travel time?
any help appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by DiamondDave
Amtrak by far. The plane you have to still go through all the security, boarding, takeoff, landing, deboarding, etc….

I take the Brunswick line from Western MD to DC myself, and that is about 1:10…. When I have left from Camden before to go to DC, I believe it was between a 1/2 hour and :45… But check the MARC train website to be sure on exact times. Many times it depends on the train you take (which time of the day)… Some trains have more stops along the way than others….

But I would definately say that the MARC is faster
