Washington DC to Quantico in the morning by train?

Question by Paul W: Washington DC to Quantico in the morning by train?
I noticed the EARLIEST the Virginia Rail Express leaves DC’s Union station is 0730, and arrives at Quantico at 0835. The next train doesn’t leave Union station until 1055!! However, for those living in Quantico for DC, trains leave every 30 minutes or so starting at 0515! Needless to say, I am very disappointed in the train schedule out of DC in the morning, particularly that the earliest it would get me to work is 0835. However, I am guessing car traffic from DC to Quantico must be pretty light for the schedule to be the way it is. I would appreciate any insights to the traffic situation from DC to Quantico in the AM. Is it a nightmare? Any suggestions? When should I leave DC so I don’t stare at brake lights the whole way? Please realize I do not live in DC now, and am trying to make some preliminary decisions before I arrive. Thanks!

Most commuters work in DC and commute from outlying commuties so thats why the schedule is like that,,
you might look into other modes of transit (perhaps the Metro?)

Q&A: Which train to ride to commute to Washington DC?

Question by Hayley B: Which train to ride to commute to Washington DC?
My family is considering a move to accept a job in Washington DC. We are from Alabama and know nothing about the area other than it is expensive and congested. On a map, Queen Anne Co. looks like it would suit us. Does anyone have insight regarding the town, the commute, the cost of living, the people, what the difference is between subway, light rail, and MARC train? From Queen Anne Co. would it be crazy to drive across 301 and then catch the train to Washington DC? I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

Queen Anne County is not considered to be part of the DC metropolitan area. I am sure there are people who do commute from the Eastern Shore, but you would be looking at 2-hour commute each way by car (rush hour), 3 hours each way if you park at Metro and take the train in. To me, potentially spending one-fourth of my day commuting is not a viable option.

As for definitions:

Subway (we call ours “The Metro”) provides rapid tranist service throughout D.C. and the immediate MD and VA suburbs. It has its own dedicated tracks and is primarily underground within the city. Website: http:///www.wmata.com

Light rail – We don’t really have light rail in D.C. There are plans to install a new light rail system, which would interconnect the neighborhoods within D.C., but the projects are still in the planning stages. The main difference between light rail and subway is that a subway is typically underground and has its own dedicated tracks, whereas light rail often is above ground and may have to share a road (like a streetcar).

MARC – Heavy rail commuter line that runs from the outer suburbs and Baltimore to Metro stations as well as directly into D.C. The trains share the same tracks used by Amtrak. Website: http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/marcTrainSystemMap.cfm

Unfortunately, Queen Anne County is not served by any of these systems.

How far from new york to las vegas? How many hours if its by train or by airplane or by driving how many hours?

Question by : How far from new york to las vegas? How many hours if its by train or by airplane or by driving how many hours?
How many hours each of them

Best answer:

Answer by jellybeancounter
By plane it’s about 4.5 hours.

According to google maps, it’s about 2500 miles and would take 1 day, 17 hours (straight) to drive.

You can check Amtrak’s site to see how long it would be by train. I know that there aren’t any trains that go directly there. You’d have to take a train from NY to Chicago, and then Chicago to the southwest, and then you’d have to take a bus.

Q&A: Vacation to Washington DC by train?

Question by William B: Vacation to Washington DC by train?
My wife and I plan to go from Miami to DC early next year.
We thought it would be pleasant to take Amtrak.
We have never taken a train before.
A friend advised us that it’s not that pleasant; that the restrooms are not clean.
Any experienced train travelers out there who can advise me on train travel? Do you check your bags or keep them with you?
Also, any recommendations as to what to do for 5 days in DC?

Best answer:

Answer by whitesox09
My experiences with Amtrak are quite the opposite. It’s very clean and the ride is remarkably smooth considering how fast the train is going. However, I would not want to be on the train longer than a few hours, but that’s just my personal opinion. You can carry bags on with you and place them above your seat (similar to an airplane but more space).

As for D.C.: Most of the Smithsonian museums, including the zoo, are pretty cool and they are all free. Of course, you’ll want to hit up all the major landmarks, but beware that some of them require you to write to your Congressman/woman in advance in order to gain entrance. Other places of interest: Georgetown, Arlington Cemetery, U Street, Eastern Market, Holocaust Museum, etc. I would recommend taking the Metro everywhere. Driving around D.C. is very painful.
