Q&A: Why are international air tickets so expensive? Legacy costs?

Question by : Why are international air tickets so expensive? Legacy costs?
Air tickets for international flights are sky-high in these couple of years. For flights from U.S. to Japan, the price has been tripled in the past 7 years.

Everyone blames high oil price, but I think it can explain a fraction of the price hike (some one says the fuel cost is only 35% of the total). Many people claim “demand and supply” issue, but I am skeptical because the number of flights allowed for each carrier is highly restrictive. Major U.S. airlines have most flights, and can control the overall price level.

I suspect a larger factor may be legacy costs (e.g., pension, healthcare costs for retirees of AA, UA and Delta). In fact, nowadays foreign carriers offer a cheaper price than AA/UA/Delta. It is often cheaper to fly from the Midwest to Asia via Toronto by Air Canada. Singapore Airlines and Japanese carriers also offer a cheaper price. Such phenomena were not common many years ago.

Do you have any evidence and justification to support or argue against my claim?
I am also skeptical on the effect of Chapter 11. The effect is superficial. Negotiation to cut benefits and effort to restructure business are not necessarily successful. Airlines which had filed Chapter 11 dropped ticket prices? Or their profit soared? Both answers were NO. Delta (bankrupted in 2007?) and AA (bankrupted in 2011) had almost the same profit – zero – in 2010. My point is that they have to file Chapter 7 to sweep legacy costs.

No, it isn’t legacy costs. All of the “legacy” airlines have filed bankruptcy in the past decade and shed their retirements systems in the process.

Part of the ticket increase is fuel prices, and part is higher taxes.

Cheaper to fly EWR to SIN through one carrier or buy multiple tickets?

Question by Die Ente: Cheaper to fly EWR to SIN through one carrier or buy multiple tickets?
I’m trying to find a flight for mid March (no choice for the short notice, family emergency) from Newark Airport to Singapore. I know that since it’s at quite short notice I’m unlikely to find any cheap deals.

But I was wondering if anyone thinks it might be cheaper to buy a ticket from Newark to some European country, then from there to Singapore (separate airlines, probably) or just a ticket from one carrier?

Best answer:

Answer by Gerald J
I think you’ll find flights from JFK to SIN cheaper than from EWR. Kayak shows many r/t flights on one carrier starting from just over $ 1,000 and flights on Cathay Pacific for a little over $ 1,100 which is a great price for an airline of that quality.

I think using one carrier will be cheaper and a lot easier as far as connecting and luggage transfer. Check out Kayak.com, they can redirect you to the airline websites to purchase if you see something you like. You can also compare separate or multiple flights on kayak as well.

When to buy tickets from SFO to ICN?

Question by *~-яκ-~*: When to buy tickets from SFO to ICN?
I’m going from San Francisco to Incheon, South Korea next summer from the tentative dates of June 21 – August 19. June 21 has for a 100 dollar difference depending if I depart on June 21 or June 22 on Singapore Air (I don’t need to be in Korea until June 25, but I’m perfectly find with getting there earlier). Right now the cheapest is Singapore Air for 1065$ . Last year I spent time in Korea again in the summer for about half the time (June-July), but I booked my flight in March/April and it cost around 1280 and it was on Delta.

Would booking the Singapore Air flight be wise for the price? Some airlines haven’t planned that far in advance to Korea, but then all other airlines are currently offering flights for the summer have priced their flights 1300+.

If you’re American, you should support American jobs.

But if you want better service, go with Singapore

Hi,
I’m from Singapore too and a Eason fan as well.

I think the official dates of his HK concert is not released yet but I’ve heard news that it will be held in Oct. HK stadium website regularly updates the concerts on its website. You can refer to the HK stadium websites for update & information on how to buy tickets when Oct draws nearer. http://www2.lcsd.gov.hk/cf/search/culture/list.cfm?lang=en&type=loc&dist=hong%20kong%20coliseum&CFID=736245&CFTOKEN=67595016

Question by Malsha: air tickets.. i don’t know… help….please?
hi

if im in india mumbai and want to land in changi airport in singapore and then i travel by car to another area and want to return to mumbai from seletar airport, how do i take a ticket?

do i have to get two one way tickets (one from mumbai to changi and the second from seletar to mumbai) or can i get a return ticket? (one ticket from mumbai to changi and from seletar to mumbai)

thank you

Best answer:

Answer by Halo
It’s simple get one ticket to Changi and ask for and open jaw ticket returning from Seletar airport (if any planes fly from there to Mumbai) if not you will have to get back to Changi. You know Changi is only 15km from Seletar airport, I don’t think you will find a return flight to Mumbai from there.
