Q&A: Can you recommend a hotel for tourists in San Francisco?

Question by marleyfu: Can you recommend a hotel for tourists in San Francisco?
My husband and I will travel with our 18 year old son and we want to see the city. We need a good location at a reasonable price. We don’t want a scary or bad quality hotel. We want to see China Town, museums, the orchestra, Alcatraz, and Fisherman’s Wharf to name some. Any guidance would help us.

Thanks!

Our stay at the Fairmont Heritage Place was flawless. Check-in is quick, staff was knowledgeable and we were quickly showed to our room, which is really a One-bedroom Apartment in the middle of Ghirardelli Square. The “room” had a fully equipped kitchen, small fridge/freezer, dining table that seats 8, integrated stereo throughout, large flat screen tvs, immense balcony overlooking the Square, ridiculously comfortable bed, large bathroom with a shower that fits 4!

The hotel offers complimentary car service within 2 miles of the hotel. Great thing is that almost everything is within that perimeter. This was one of the best perks – the drivers were also so nice and happy to pick you up. Quick, easy and so convenient. It was like having a chauffeured car on call! And the rides were sweet – we’re talking Escalades.

There is a complimentary breakfast – with the usual breads, juices, coffees and cereals with some hot items as well. Everything I had was excellent and it was a great way to start the day. Coffee and Tea are also available all day. They do complimentary wine tasting every evening as well.

We had rented bikes one day and stopped by the hotel on our way back from the bridge. As the doorman saw us pull up, he quickly rushed outside and ushered the bikes into the lobby himself saving us from having to do the arduous task of locking the bikes ourselves after a long ride :)

I didn’t have a single complaint during the entire stay. Each evening I felt as if I were returning to my own home. It was a great feeling to have on vacation. We really didn’t want to leave at all! This would be an excellent choice for couple or families traveling together.

TIP: Stop by the farmer’s market at Fort Mason or the Ferry Building and stock your fridge with all the fresh goodness that SF has to offer. The butter is amazing here – it really is true: cows are happier in California!

Room Tip: Specify first floor if you will be on the move

Question by traveller: Can you recommend good restaurants near the Fedral Center sw metro in Washington dc or near L’Enfat Plaze met
A friend is coming in for the day, Wednesday, and will stay at Federal Center SW . Time is tight . We want to visit for lunch and or dinner and go to a nice restaurant (up to $ 20 per person lunch, $ 30 dinner for dinner without drinks ) Any suggestions . We could take a cab , not too far, if necessary to nice place.

Best answer:

Answer by tbugs
Go to the Market Inn. It is a very well known seafood restaurant. Your price range is definitely on the low side for a “nice” restaurant, though. Plan about $ 35 each for lunch and around $ 60 for dinner at a “nice” Washington DC restaurant. Yes, that is without wine or drinks.

Question by : what is a nice restaurant in Washington DC? what would you recommend?
me and my girlfriend are going down to Washington DC this summer, and i was wondering if anyone knows of a really nice restaurant down there. price isn’t an issue, i just want to know what you would recommend. thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Erin
If price isn’t an issue, I’d highly recommend Komi. Komi is the #1 restaurant in DC right now. You don’t get a menu, they bring you about 15 smaller courses. If you’re the adventurous foodie type, go here.

Can anyone recommend a Washington DC hotel that is walking distance from the Museum of American History?

Question by Jeri Lynne: Can anyone recommend a Washington DC hotel that is walking distance from the Museum of American History?
We are taking Amtrak into Washington, and were intersted in finding a hotel within walking distance of both the museum and Union Station…that is also in a safe area. Help??

Best answer:

Answer by VeggieTart (The Cranky Agnostic)
There really aren’t hotels in walking distance of the National Mall, but as the Museum of American History is pretty close to both the Smithsonian and Federal Triangle Metro stations (Orange and Blue lines), it’s pretty easy to get around. Metro is quite safe.

Union Station (on the Red Line) is a few blocks off a rather dicey neighborhood, and it’s not walking distance to the museums. There are several hotels near Metro Center (Red, Orange, and Blue lines) and Gallery Place (Red, Yellow, and Green lines), but they are rather expensive.

My first visit to Washington DC, what do you recommend 10 pts?

Question by IDK: My first visit to Washington DC, what do you recommend 10 pts?
I only have one day to look at sites. What would you recommend is a must see? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Smiley831
No way in one day could you get all of DC in. But to get a sample do what all the tourists do: go down to the national mall check out the monuments and check out the museums. There are a lot of places that will give tours but honestly I don’t think there is a better way to get into the city than to explore on your own and become one of the regulars. Have fun!

I recommend visiting Chinatown (for the food and take a fortune cookie factory tour), Fisherman’s Wharf (great seafood), Pier 39 and the Embarcadero (shopping), ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, ride on a cable car for fun, drive down the crookedest street in the U.S. (Lombard St), China Beach (for a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge), The San Francisco Zoo, Golden Gate Park (Japanese Gardens are lovely), Muir Woods (located just north of the city), Alcatraz, and Angel Island.
