Heading up north to see the giant sequoias is definitely worth the trip! (Though I”m not sure if it’s in your time range) Some of these old growth trees are as big around as an SUV and as tall as most skyscrapers.

The absolute best way to travel around Washington DC is by using the Metro (DC’s subway system).
The best thing to do is check-out the Metro map and get off at what they call the Smithsonian Metro stop. When you go above ground…it’s all right there…like the Emerald City in Wizard of Oz. The Smithsonian stop is right in the heart of the National Mall that extends from the Capitol to the Potomac River. All the major monuments are right there.
Be sure to do the obligatory tours of the Capitol and Washington Monuments. Tickets for entry are FREE…but you have to get them in advance of the time you wish to take the tours. Best bet is to get your tickets in the morning for an afternoon tour, and then spend the morning exploring.
Security is tight at the Capitol. No food. No liquids. No nail clippers. Yadda yadda. But the tour is pretty cool.
Ok, but the real treasures of DC are the Smithsonian Museums..and they are also located right on the National Mall, between the Washington Monument and Capitol. Again, entrance is FREE and there are no tickets to bother with. Modest security to get in…then you can enjoy them. Natural History Museum. American History Museum. Some other art galleries (which are also super cool). But, my favorite is the Air & Space Museum. I’ve taken friends there from out of town that said they were not interested in that “stuff”. But once they stepped through the doors and saw the Gemini and Apollo space capsules, their eyes lit-up. They also have an inexpensive food court in the Air & Space museum with stuff like McDonald’s and Pizza and sandwiches. (Probably the cheapest place to eat on the Mall.)
Some final pointers here. Be sure to dress warm and comfortable. Be sure to have some really comfortable walking shoes. The National Mall is a BIG area to cover…and so are the museums. You probably know this, but have a game plan in case your family-group becomes seperated.
Oh, and others on here will recommend stuff like Georgetown and DuPoint Circle areas and stuff like that. Fine…if you have the time. But there’s not much to see. Those are more “trendy areas” where artists and coffee shop types like to hang-out and sip lattes, wear Birkenstock shoes and discuss ancient Zorastian poetry. The kids will get bored very fast. (Even I get bored very fast.)
Most hotels will have free touristy type maps of the area to promote the local sites and sounds of DC. Plan on eating lunch at the Air & Space Museum and then saving your appetites for when you go back to your hotel (where it will be cheaper to eat and you have some reasonable choices that won’t break the bank).

Question by ADAMOS: I’m looking to sublet my apartment in San Francisco over New Year’s Eve. What precautions should i take?
What should I ask of my potential renter(i.e., information and a deposit)? I won’t be around for a majority of the time I’m offering the sublet and want to protect myself and my personal items. Thanks.

Can anyone help me with ideas of places to look other than craigslist (which btw does not help) to find an affordable place? Will be starting school there in the fall.

Well, actually, Craigslist is one of the best places to find them. Other than that, you might check into rental agencies. Of course, you’ll pay for it.
You also might post requests on whatever social media or communications that your school uses.
