Advice for live plants in a new tank?

Question by Space Jew: Advice for live plants in a new tank?
Hey everyone, I’ve successfully kept a couple bigger tanks (a 29 gal freshwater an a 20 gal brackish), but recently moved to San Francisco and had to give them to friends. Now that I’m here, I want to start anoter tank, and this time I want to use live plants instead of plastic.
I got a 6 gal set from petco, like this one http://reviews.petco.com/3554/14978/reviews.htm and don’t want to put fish in it until I am sure I can keep the plants going healthy – just a simple little setup for the upper shelf of my desk with a flourescent hood and hang-on filter. I haven’t set it up yet because I want it to turn out right and wanted to ask first, and money isn’t much of an issue.
So, what sort of substrate and nutrients should I use to get a sort of half-mossy/half-sandy floor like this? http://www.adana-usa.com/images/gallery0/8.jpg I also want to get a few plants to root and get some other plants that will root on porous rock.
Aquarium experts, please advise!
Thanks, John! – what sort of substrate should I use?
FFAFish – like I said, I’m more focusing on plants with this one. If I do get any complex organisms for it, it’ll probably be a couple shrimp.

a 6 gallon is to small for fish. i have a betta alone in a 10 and 3 goldfish in a 55. a 29 isnt big either. just toss some in. you could only keep one betta and a ghost shrimp in that tank

I have the option to live in these cities. Which ones are best for my likes?

Question by .: I have the option to live in these cities. Which ones are best for my likes?
I am a 23 year old single male college grad.
I want to live in a city with plenty of twentysomethings and college age population.
I want to live in a city with plenty of warm days and a lot of sunshine. Hot and humid summers are not preferable, but hot and dry summers are ok.
I want a city with a lot of nightlife. Plenty of partygoers, hot girls, etc.
Public transportation should be efficient. Ideally, I shouldn’t need to drive much.
I want lots of dining options, ethnic food, cafes, etc. Must have a sense of place.
Low crime rate and affordable rent are a plus, but not as important. All cities have their safe areas and their bad areas. I am willing to pay higher rent if the above factors work out.
Here are my choices:
Boston
New York City
Washington, DC
Durham, NC
Atlanta
Miami
New Orleans
Los Angeles
Portland, OR
Denver
Phoenix
Please advise!

Here’s my advice from the places I’ve been to (I lived in NYC as a child and live near LA now):
New York is basically the same as Los Angeles (lots of girls, lots of nightlife/things to do, tons of dining options) except it’s on the opposite coast, is a lot less spread out than LA, and has much colder falls/winters than LA. LA is never really cold, even in winter.
You might need to drive in LA, but you DEFINITELY won’t need a car to get around NYC–in fact, in NYC, a car will probably slow you down compared to walking/subways/buses.
A lot of people say LA and NYC are unsafe, but really, they’re only unsafe if you’re wandering alone through dark places by yourself after nightfall or in a bad area (such as East LA or sketchy parts of NYC).
However, if you’re more into the indie sort of lifestyle, I’d DEFINITELY say Portland. Portland is a haven for that kind of people
Boston is FREQUENTLY very cold but has a good music/art scene.
Miami seems to have a lot of trashy people. Just sayin’.

Question by : Where is a fun place to live with an easy commute to UCSF in San Francisco?
I am young professional in my early 30′s taking a job in San Francisco for 6 months. I am looking for a fun/interesting place to live in the city that will be an easy commute to and from both UCSF medical center campuses. I plan on bringing a car but would prefer to mostly take public transportation. Any suggestions welcome.

Where are good and bad places to live in and around San Francisco?

Question by : Where are good and bad places to live in and around San Francisco?
I’m looking at taking a new job in San Francisco, (I currently live on the east coast) and I am trying to find housing. I can’t afford much, but I’m trying to determine what areas are bad (ie dangerous and likely to hold lots of not so nice apartments) and which are decent? Are there any parts to really avoid?

Avoid the area called HUNTERS POINT. It is near Candlestick Park. Depending on your sexual orientation, there is an area called the Castro and it is the gay area. Great areas include the Nob Hill area and Twin Peaks. Pacific Heights is very nice. The area on the West Central part of the city, South of Golden Gate Park and getting near the ocean is less expensive and still nice … called the Sunset District. However, it is the area that gets the most fog and stays the coolest (sometimes cold).
The main street that runs South out of Golden GAte Park is 19th AVe. It goes down past San Francisco State University. The areas around SFSU and just East of 19th are real nice. 19th Ave runs into a regional Interstate (I-280) and 280 runs down the Peninsula to San Jose. On the way, you go through Daly City which border SF on the South. Daly City is nice as long as you are in the hills.
Many people like to live in the East Bay and commute in. BART train, although a bit costly, is a great way to get into the City and not pay hefty parking lot fees ($ 20-$ 30/day). The Bay Bridge is $ 5 for single drivers and $ 2 or $ 3 for carpools of 3 people. Oakland is a GEM of a city as long as you live near the hills. Berkeley and Emeryville are also excellent places to live. The cost of housing in the East Bay is less than in SF and, many times, the lower rent makes the cost of commuting worthwhile. The East Bay also has incredible weather (I think the best anywhere).
Be ready for “sticker shock” when renting. SF is comparable to NYC. I’ve a friend who rents out a duplex in Oakland … one bedroom in each unit and each unit is around 725 sq ft … she gets around $ 1650/mo for each unit (both are currently rented) and in that price range her fee is very reasonable for very nice units.

I would recommend looking in the Adams Morgan neighborhood if you want to live in DC. If you are open to living in northern VA I would suggest Arlington, especially the Clarendon or Ballston neighborhoods.

Can you be an actor in Los Angeles if you live in San Francisco?

Question by Anonymous: Can you be an actor in Los Angeles if you live in San Francisco?
My family owns a rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco, where I want to stay after college, but I also want to do movie work in LA. Is it realistic to have an agent in Hollywood and fly down for auditions, even if I live in SF? Has anybody ever done this?
Best answer:
Answer by R K
no, if you want to work in LA, that’s where you will need to be. you can’t fly to LA every other day for an audition.
