I have to tell my friends I am moving across the country. Advice?

Question by JessieBears: I have to tell my friends I am moving across the country. Advice?
I know this is going to be long but i think my understanding my life story is important if i want good advice.
This is not the first time I have moved. Its the 6th time, actually. In fourth grade I moved from Washington (state) to Mississippi and hated it. I spent four years counting the days until we moved again (the longest I had ever lived anywhere). In late April my parents told me we would most likely move to Florida. Even though I wanted to move north again I was ecstatic to get out of small town South. We couldn’t tell anyone because of my father’s position in the community. (His job is why we move all the time anyway). Then around the end July (I went all that time keeping the secret) the Florida thing fell through and my dad began looking for another job. He ended up getting something in Pennsylvania. School started on August 6th but we still couldn’t tell anyone. I was in 8th grade and went to the first two days of school until my dad calls. Pack your stuff, you’re getting on a plane tomorrow to pick out a school in Pennsylvania before school starts (It didn’t start until August 29th there.) While we have disappeared off the face of the earth and are half the country away touring schools, dad calls again. He made the announcement his company and we have to call all of our friends from the hotel and tell them we are moving to Pennsylvania in two weeks (we flew back after a week picking out schools, spent a week in mississippi, then left for good). It was really sad but I got over it fast because I was getting my dream. we were moving to a good sized city within driving distance of New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. Now I have lived in PA for a year and a few months. I love it here so much. I love my school and my friends, my house, the whole freakin state of Pennsylvania. I am so happy. My parents told my sister and I we would graduate high school here. I am a freshman right now. Unfortunately, my dads job isn’t working out. He took a job in a small town in Georgia. The good news is, my sister is a junior in high school and they aren’t going to make her transfer. So my mom, she, and I will stay here until she graduates, I will finish freshman and sophomore year here at my school. Then I have to move to Georgia and spend my junior and senior year at this small (60 kids in my grade. yuck!) preppy school in hicktown, Georgia. I’m really upset about it. I’m used to moving, I’ve been to nine different schools already and 6 states so I’m not that concerned about making new friends or anything. Its just that I love it here so much and I love my school (200 kids in my grade)
Now I have to tell my friends and its bringing back bad memories of last time. This will be easier because I have all the time in the world. My sister isn’t telling anyone because it won’t affect her or them. I got the ok to tell people last week and I just can’t do it. But keeping the secret is stressing me out and I don’t want to have to go months like last time. I also get to spend almost two more years here. But, its harder because I really don’t want to leave.
I thought I would call everyone one at a time this weekend but I really don’t want to. and i can’t just tell them at school. But I can’t call every single person I know, I’m going to have to tell some of them at school and people are going to talk and stuff. What should I do?
no offense to anyone who lives in the South, the only reason I hate the South is that I am a northern girl.

Great places to bring friends to in San Francisco?

Question by kitty purry: Great places to bring friends to in San Francisco?
I have friends who are coming this weekend to visit. They have all been here before, so they’ve done the “touristy” thing of going to the Golden Gate Bridge, hanging out by Fisherman’s Wharf and the Pier, etc. I was wondering if there were any other fun things you can suggest for us to do in the city. And which not-too-expensive food places would you suggest I bring them to? (something along the lines of Bi-Rite, Ike’s, etc)
Thanks!

You shouldn’t visit the IMAX in New Orleans. It is nice, but it’s a waste of time if you’ve ever been to a movie theater. But as long as your gettung early starts you should be able to visit all the places you want to see.

Should I write my friend’s name in Chinese? Do I have to?
Posted by Mostafa Safavi in All about Singapore on August 31st, 2011
Question by Wowszers That’s Funny! =]: Should I write my friend’s name in Chinese? Do I have to?
I have a penpal and we’re really great friends now. I want to send her a letter with a small light gift inside. Like a little necklace. I have an international stamp but is it okay if I add a forever stamp too just in case it weighs a little more? The post is closed on sundays and I can’t magically weigh it myself and I want to drop it in the mailbox before I put it off and forget for another week
Also I always called her by her English name because that’s what she likes to be called. She’s only showed me her real name twice.
It’s 蔡侑陵. She only told me it in characters. My Chinese is crap and I don’t like using google translate for names and such in case it’s wrong. I do know her last name is Tsai. But should I go ahead and write in Chinese characters her name on the envelope? My Chinese writing isn’t impressive either so I’m afraid it’ll look weird and illegible. I don’t want to ask her to write out her whole name in English because it’s a surprise for her birthday and she’s on vacation. I know her address because she gave it to me before when we discussed wanting to send letters 2 months ago but got attached to chatting on MSN. She lives in Taiwan. So maybe someone can translate her first name, who actually knows Chinese. Also would they know to send it to her if it’s in English? I only ever sent a letter/package twice. To Singapore and Korea, but I thought things might be done differently.

English version of first name, last name should be fine. The post delivery person will recognize the family name even if it’s written in English letters. So, for example, if her English name she likes is Burt, then address it to Burt Tsai. Her family will either know which of them is Burt or which of them has an English-speaking friend.
I have family in Taiwan who don’t really know any English but would receive such a letter without confusion.
The spelling of her Chinese name in English letters would be Tsai Yu-Ling (Cai4 You4ling2 in mainland pinyin).
If it’s important enough that you can’t wait until Monday to weigh it (and risk forgetting), then it’s probably important enough to justify the cost of an extra stamp.

California Road Trip for two teen best friends?
Posted by Mostafa Safavi in All about San Francisco on August 2nd, 2011
Question by Thomas Donohue: California Road Trip for two teen best friends?
My best friend and I want to go on a vacation together. We’re both currently 18, but we still need time to save for the trip so it will be another year or so before we take the trip. We live on Long Island in New York and want to experience a dramatically different landscape and we think California is just the ticket.
I have already done some research and have picked out a few spots I definitely want to check out, but several questions remain about how much time I should dedicate to each destination and the economics of the whole endeavor – we’re both students and are on a relatively tight budget. I know we wont be able to do everything I’ve picked and I’d like some advice on what to do and what to skip. We’d like to balance serene natural experiences with exciting city adventures. As far as nightlife goes, we not into dance clubs and would prefer live music venues. Some suggestions for each city listed would be greatly appreciated. We love rock and alternative music. I also have an obsession with french fries. If you know of any great places for french fries along our journey please share them with me. When we go to the national parks we would camp but when in the bigger cities we could also use some suggestions for cool hotels that arent too pricey.
Here are the places I would like to visit.
San Diego
Torrey Pines State Reserve
Los Angeles
Channel Islands National Park
Hearst Castle
Big Sur
Monterey
Santa Cruz
San Francisco
Point Reyes National Seashore
Yosemite
Lake Tahoe
Mendocino
Arcata
Redwood National Park
In the daytime we would like to check out parks, zoos, art galleries and museums, as well as architectural landmarks and interesting neighborhoods. Any points of interest that you could contribute for any of these destinations would be greatly appreciated, I’m just trying to gather as much information as possible.

That’s quite a list and will take a long time. Cali’s a big state. You might want to do the Pacific Coast Highway and see where you can detour from there. Generally people break up their Cali trips into NoCal and SoCal and usually they’re done on separate occasions because people in the US don’t get long vacation periods. Really, it’s a big state.
Get AAA to map out a trip for you–or do it yourself on Mapquest.com–and you’ll see what I mean. I’ve gone to many, but not all the places you list, but over 5 separate trips, each lasting from 6 to 15 days. I’d pick a route–like PCH as mentioned above–and see where it takes me. We spent a day at the Hearst Castle alone.
Good luck.
