All of the monuments and Smithsonian museums are in the same area, it will be easy to take a day or two and visit all of those. My favorite monument is the FDR which is a bit further than the others. Also the Holocaust Museum is sad but is a very good museum. Also, the brand new Spy museum is supposed to be great, and teen boys would probably like it.

Q&A: What Places Should I Go Visit In Washington DC with a Family?

Question by Nerd Herd: What Places Should I Go Visit In Washington DC with a Family?
Going to DC ON June 18-20

Best answer:

Answer by MomSezNo
Any or all of the Smithsonian Institute museums. Go to their website for more info. They are almost all located along the Mall, but it is a long walk from one end to the other – not that you can see all the museums in one day, anyway! Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial are both nice; Washington Monument; Congress [if you want to go inside you have to go to the little tent at the corner of the Mall and get tickets and there are only a limited number available so go early].

Go to the library and get a tour book for DC. Or go to one or more of the on-line travel info sites: Frommer, Fodor, Lonely Planet, etc. TripAdvisor.com has destination guides, as well as hotel lists with comments from past guests.

Washington DC family to visit Washington DC frugally?

Best place for a family to stay is the Days Inn in the 4500 block of Connecticut Ave., NW. It’s very well located about 2 blocks from the red line metro, and in a very safe neighborhood. It’s also one of the nicer Days Inn’s. You may find cheaper hotel rooms in the suburbs but the cost of transporting the family back and forth will eat up what you save pretty quickly. They also have free parking which many city hotels don’t offer.

Things to do… there are a ton of museums; almost all of the Smithsonian museums are free and it’s impossible not to find one you like! Also look into the Heritage Trails— self-guided walking tours of the city. The Adams Morgan trail is very interesting and also goes through consistently safe neighborhoods. Check a search engine for details.

Food.. check out Booeymonger (3 or 4 locations, one is about 2 metro stops north of the Days Inn at Friendship Heights) for casual dining/deli; very inexpensive and tasty. Also try some Ethiopian food; its hard to get good Ethiopian outside of DC (we have the biggest Ethiopian population outside of Ethiopia). It’s tasty food although not especially pretty; there are no utensils so you scoop bits of stewed meats and veggies up with spongy napkin bread. If you’re not drinking alcohol, you can have a very nice Ethiopian dinner on $ 10-12/person plus tax/tip. Try Dukem at 10th and U NW (Green line/U Street metro).

Washington DC Hotels for Family Vacation?

Question by Samantha N: Washington DC Hotels for Family Vacation?
We are planning on traveling S. Florida to DC on Aug 8-15 for a family vacation. We have two families going with 4 kids, ages 8 -16. We are so very confused as to where to stay. We have the options of flying into Dulles or Reagan. At first we thought about staying in Downtown DC, now we are considering staying somewhere on the outskirts, and taking the Metro to see the sites. I have been online until my eyes are sore, trying to determine the best choices, and have totally confused myself. Can anyone please recommend a hotel in the price range of $ 120.00-$ 150.00 a night that would best fit our needs. What are thoughts of staying downtown as opposed to staying a little farther away , pros / cons? Any info at all would help us ! Thanks so much!!!

Best Western, Rosslyn

Comfort Inn, Pentagon

anywhere in Arlington, VA, close to town, and near a metro. Ballston, Clarendon, Rosslyn, Crystal City, Pentagon City, are fairly safe areas. Lots of restaurants to choose from.

You should stay on the outskirts, in Virginia stay near metro stations, it’s easy to get into town that way. For your budget. It’s too expensive in downtown, and probably small, and rundown. Plus all you need a clean bed and place to sleep to recharge batteries for all the walking.

Good luck!

Fun family things to do in San Francisco?

Question by Lily: Fun family things to do in San Francisco?
I’m going on vacation with my dad and 12 year old brother (I’m 17) soon to San Francisco. None of us have been there before so we wanted to check out the cool things they have to do there. Unfortunately we have no idea what there is there besides the Golden Gate Bridge and a Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum. Do you have any ideas on fun family activities?
