The NV economy has consistently performed above any other area along the east coast except, arguably, the greater Boston area.

The difference is that Boston is high technology driven based on its outstanding engineering universities. Whereas NV is driven by both technology and federal government work, much of which is information technology focused.

Additionally, the main US hub of the Internet has always been in NV, being both the home of MCI (now Verizon Business) and UUNET (now Verizon Business, via the MCI acquisition).

As a result of being able to scarf up billions in federal technology spending, the NV area is somewhat insulated when the economy becomes sluggish – the government spends in good times and bad.

NY, of course, is always a contender too. But, I don’t believe that it is quite as insulated from economic slowdowns.

Is it really always rainy in Portland, OR?

Question by : Is it really always rainy in Portland, OR?
I will be doing a year-long fellowship in Portland, Oregon starting in August. People always talk about how rainy it is, but I have also heard that it hardly snows, and that summers are NICE and sunny. I have lived in Atlanta and Maryland (this might give you something to compare Portland to). What is it really like?

And how is the nightlife there? Is there a lot to do for 20-somethings? I have heard it is a young city. Can you also comment on this please? Again, compare it to Atlanta and Maryland (Washington, DC area)

Yes, it is very rainy in the fall and spring and sunny in the summer. It doesn’t usually snow but you can go to the mountains for that. It is busy in the city and there are a lot of things to do. In the country It is beautiful. I would highly recommend coming to Oregon. I have lived here all of my life and have no intention of leaving. I hope this helped! :)

Does anyone know why recently flights to and from San Francisco is always delay?

Question by laurina: Does anyone know why recently flights to and from San Francisco is always delay?

Best answer:

Answer by Jimmbbo
It’s been going on for years…

SFO has two sets of parallel runways, but they are too close for parallel IFR approaches, so the capacity of the airport is decreased when the weather goes below VFR.

When I was flying for a west coast regional who served United in SFO, we used to call it the “San Fran 1 – 2 – 3 rule: 1 cloud, 2 airplanes, 3 hour delays”

If Ballets are so expensive…why do they always ask for donations?

Question by Mark Fisher: If Ballets are so expensive…why do they always ask for donations?
Entering a relationship with a ballet and opera enthusiast I quickly learned just how expensive it was to see such grand theatrical performances. I’m amazed to see that some theater companies, i.e., San Francisco Ballet, charge $ 1900 per set in the best area (Front..center box…something something)…and the cheapest seat usually goes for $ 60…which faces a pillar.

I’ve always wondered with ticket prices so high, why do they always ask for donations? If it’s a matter of overhead…wouldn’t lowering ticket prices bring in more customers?

Fiscally, what’s the deal? Ballet and Opera are cultural landpoints but hardly on the same level of museums. Museums which charge a whopping $ 12-18 fee with many discount programs. I understand why museums *like the Getty in Los Angeles* ask for donations, but as museums behave like libraries, I can’ t see the ballet or opera in the same light…particularly when you consider the cheap prices of attending a symphony.

Ballet tickets are priced to what will sell but the ticket income pays only 40% of the cost. Raise the ticket prices to cover the cost and no one could afford them. Lower the ticket prices and donations would not cover the cost.

Good question tho’
