I always see apartments in New York, and they are sooo tiny! My livingroom is the size of the whole apartment..

But, I am so fasinated w/ the lifestyle of New Yorkers…. is life really that fast paced?

NYC is overrated. And yes, most apartments are very small, unless you have at least 5 million. That amount will ensure a decent sized apartment in the city.

It’s a city with a lot of things to do. Depends on how much time you have. If you don’t want to do the Fisherman’s Wharf thing, then you might hop on the subway (BART) over to Berkeley and knock around the UC campus. Cheap transport, plenty of good second hand book and music stores. You could have a great deal of fun just wandering around there. SF has similar stuff, but a larger area. It would take time to find it all.
If you are going to stay awhile, then get a job as a bicycle messenger. It’s a great life for a twenty-something with no dependents.

The Harrington Hotel is on 13 th street right in the middle of downtown walking distance to everything and block from the white house. they have affordable rates, you can walk right out of the hotel to the city streets.

I met my now husband 5 years ago when I was 18 and we’ve been married for almost 4 years now. Our relationship has always been rocky. He has always been irresponsible with money which has been the cause for a lot of our early fights because we don’t have a lot of money and he smokes and smokes weed and it gets expensive. I fell out of love with him when I was pregnant with our first baby because he was terrible to me. He would always yell at me and call me names, leave me at home while he partied with his friends, and told me I was unattractive because of the weight I gained. Somehow he talked me into moving across the country to New York where his family is from. I’ve been here for 2 years now and it’s not bad, but our relationship is. I feel like his roommate. I don’t feel close to him at all. He doesn’t get so angry anymore, but he still smokes and smokes pot. I wish he would spend less money on himself and more on the kids and I. I need things too, but if he spends all the extra money on his stuff then I’m not going to spend the last of our money on what I want. I’m in college now and he works. He gets a car from work, but I ride the bus to school because school is about 8 miles away. It’s not a big deal, but I want to get a car of my own so I can go other places to run errands or take my kids to the doctors or whatever. He doesn’t want me to get a car because we’ll have to pay for insurance, but I just feel like it’s easy for him to say because he has a car to do whatever and I have to ride the bus with the kids to go anywhere. I’m getting a grant from school and can use it to get a cheap car to get around, but he doesn’t want me to. It’s not because we need the money because he just got a promotion at work and can pay the bills easily. I got a loan from school also and paid up on our bills and paid for several months of rent to help out. I really don’t want to be with him, I am though for the kids, but really I don’t see how I can leave him without dropping out of school to work and with no family support. I feel like he wants me to be trapped so he can have complete control over me. What do you guys think?

YOu do have it figured out. Control freak thats him. Get a job, buy a car and move out after you save enough money. You are not his prisoner, he does not own you, remember that. The pot causes people to do stupid things. The fact that he buys it instead of taking care of you and the kids makes it clear he is addicted. Do not raise your children around that, or they will too.

I don’t know exactly what shop but try the fresh fish vendors along Stockton Street in Chinatown. Most shops are between Broadway and Clay.

My boyfriend and I are doing a little road trip to Maine at the end of this month.
We are making a pit stop in DC for 2 or 3 days. I’ve been looking up things to do while we are there but I’d like to plan my intinerary based off of peoples experiences rather than what I can read on travel websites.

What are some good bars and restaurants we can check out?

Parks?
Museums?

How far from MSG are you willing to trek? the dining options around penn station are terrible. If you can take a 3 minute cab to chelsea, or even cross town to gramercy, there are great italian restaurants on almost every street.

An ill-timed — for Obama — profile of former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines, forced out in an accounting mess a few years ago.
The Style Section piece reports that he’s recently been taking “calls from Barack Obama’s presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters.”
Taking calls? Doesn’t that mean Obama has been calling him? The McCain Campaign had a nice video out on the connection between Obama and Raines. And there is another video out of Fannie Mae head Daniel Mudd praising Obama.
So who is Daniel Mudd? I think it will come as no surprise that he lives in a Mudd hut. A 22-room Mudd hut. Evidently ripping off the taxpayers pays very well. Very well indeed.
As more than a million US homeowners face devastating mortgage foreclosures, ousted Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd continues to live in an opulent Washington, DC, mansion replete with expansive gardens, servants’ quarters and a home theater.
Mudd, whose former company is being bailed out by billions in taxpayer dollars, calls home a 22-room Colonial mansion on Newark Street in tony Cleveland Park, built on the former property of President Grover Cleveland.
The eight-bedroom, eight-bath pad includes large public rooms with fireplaces, a home theater, a gym, a wine cellar, a solarium, servants’ quarters, a terrace off the master-bedroom suite, and a gourmet kitchen.
The gated, landscaped property also features a pool, fountains, gardens and a guesthouse.
The property is so lavish that some company employees dubbed it “Mudd Manor.”
And they’re furious that the executive at the helm of the ship as it sank into profound crisis has surfaced relatively unscathed, at least for now.
“Hey, he lost his limo and corner suite [at the office], but Mudd Manor is not a bad place to contemplate your next move,” said a bitter Fannie Mae employee who requested anonymity.
“Most Fannie Mae employees are reeling from their employee stock-option-plan account balances’ going to cents on the dollar.”
So the little people get fleeced and the big guys walk.

Any time you visit a city for the first time it is a good idea to borrow or purchase a guide book. The book can give you lots of helpful info on wether, attractions, public transportation and includes maps to help you get around.

Here is my Must Do San Francisco

1. Ride a Cable Car, the only moving historical landmark in the world. Stop off at the Cable Car Barn at Washington and Mason to get a full understanding of this unique form of transportation. Riding the Powell Hyde line will allow you to see Lombard Street the famous crooked street.

2. Visit Alcatraz, this former prison is the most popular destination in San Francisco. The bay cruise to and from the island will give you the opportunity to see the skyline from the water a unique perspective. It is wise to purchase tickets before you arrive as tours are often sold out http://www.alcatrazcruises.com

3. Visit Coit Tower, Beautiful murals inside, impressive bay view from the tower or Pioneer Park at the base. Then descend Telegraph hill via the Filbert Steps on the east side of the park for a unique view of how folks on Telegraph Hill live, more beautiful bay views and the chance to hear and see the famous Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

No landlord is going to rent to you usless you have a job at the new location.
Not unless you can pay 6 months to 1 year’s worth of rent upfront.
For this, you might as well sign up for a 6 month lease.
Google: Corporate apartements (they tend to rent by the month).
Of course, renting month to month is going to cost you much, much more than signing a lease. Be ready for the financial hit.

The most cost effective way would be to take the metro from Union Station to L’Enfant Plaza and then take the 5a bus to IAD. Otherwise, a taxi cab will get you there, but at a much higher price!

I have traveled through DC several times while living in Richmond VA. A few things I know:
Don’t drive in the HOV lane by yourself they will ticket you.
Crime rate in DC is pretty high.
Weather is fairly mild, it rarely goes below 30 degrees F in winter.
Cost of living is very high.

Where is a good place to have a wedding rehearsal dinner with ample parking and good value?? We are looking at having about 30-40 people and price is a big factor.

We are having the wedding at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Saturday… So, the wedding rehearsal will be on Friday afternoon-evening… Considering the traffic in DC on Fridays and price, where is a good place to go? Any ideas? Buffet is also not preferred… Drinks not necessary… Please HELP!!

Don’t get married. That is the best advise I can give you. Sure, it may seem like a good idea now, but you WILL be sorry a couple of years down the road. Run man! RUN!! Run like the wind!!!..and never look back!

We are a family of 8-10 people traveling by car to NYC. Since we have a car we don’t mind staying in NJ or somewhere else that is a nice/safe area for families but also cheaper than NYC but within 30 minutes so we can see all the places in NYC.

Any areas we should consider staying at? or Specific hotels?

We will probably get 2 rooms for 2 nights each and want to stay under $ 400 if possible

why not stay in Manhattan and stay in Radio city apartments? heard they were very reasonable.

I understand parking is quite expensive in the downtown area. Close to $ 30 a night. Can you let me know which area will most probably not have a parking problem?Marina, Nob Hills etc?

Sorry, but as far as I know all hotels charge for parking. If they don’t have the space, there are parking garages which are also expensive. Good luck

I’d suggest Redwood City, which is south of San Francisco, or some of the other suburbs south of San Francisco, like Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Daly City, and San Bruno, to name a few. I’ve visited my relatives out there and it’s a good area to live in. People make good wages. Cost of living is still high, but not as high as in San Francisco.

We are driving from New York to Cleveland late June and as its a 8 hour drive, we wanted to break the journey by spending a night in a state park or in a B&B along the way, in a scenic location. I see there are several state parks such as Moshannon Forest, Bald Eagle Forest, Sproul State Forest- which one of these is the best and any suggestions for where we could spend the night?

It’s an 8 hour trip. There is no need to break up the journey into two separate days.

Living in Washington DC near Union Station and commuting to Quantico?

I noticed the EARLIEST the Virginia Rail Express leaves DC’s Union station is 0730, and arrives at Quantico at 0835. The next train doesn’t leave Union station until 1055!! However, for those living in Quantico for DC, trains leave every 30 minutes or so starting at 0515! Needless to say, I am very disappointed in the train schedule out of DC in the morning, particularly that the earliest it would get me to work is 0835. However, I am guessing car traffic from DC to Quantico must be pretty light for the schedule to be the way it is. I would appreciate any insights to the traffic situation from DC to Quantico in the AM. Is it a nightmare? Any suggestions? When should I leave DC so I don’t stare at brake lights the whole way? Please realize I do not live in DC now, and am trying to make some preliminary decisions before I arrive. Thanks!

The primary commuting direction from the south is north towards DC, Northern VA and suburban MD. Going south from DC is the reverse commute and even that can be heavy until one gets south of Ft. Belvoir. I have always avoided I-95 during the AM/PM rush hours due to the aggressive driving and general rudeness; however, I’ve made it from the Mixing Bowl to the Quantico Exit in 15-20 minutes most of the time. If one is at the Mixing Bowl by 7 AM, one should be at Quantico before 7:30 AM.

VRE may add another southbound train when demand calls for it and the VRE management is usually responsive to commuter questions.

I’m an 18 year old female and I just graduated high school. My mother just informed me tonight that i have 2 weeks to get a job and get out of her house. What i would like to know is what sorts of jobs are that that can help me raise enough money to pay rent, car insurance, phone bill, food, and the other normal things that i’ll have to be paying for. I have enough money to support myself for about 2 months, but i need some help. I live in New York and things are not exactly cheap here. advice please?

Apply for a retail sales consultant @ any corperate cell phone store….believe it or not we make as much ir more$ than someone that’s gone to college 4+ yrs. You just has to hustle and be good with stress and ppl being agitated therefore taking it out on you. You may have to have some sort of sales experience (but even if you don’t id try) and you have to hit or exceed your monthly goals that are provided by the company! Good luck!
