I'm willing to bet that the person who recommended Tavern on the Green is not from New York. It's a beautiful restaurant that is outrageously expensive for the quality of food that is served. There are several diners in New York that serve better food.

The River Cafe is expensive - not at all as costly as Per Se or Megu - but it's a gorgeous place with consistantly delicious food. It's a barge that's on the Brooklyn side of the East River and every seat here has a great view of Manhattan - service is excellent and it would be a memorable experience.
http://www.rivercafe.com/

If you like Spanish food (from Spain, not Mexico - it's an entirely different cuisine), Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful - for $ 25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices - AND IT's GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad - (I never order salad when there's another choice, so I can't comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego - from Galecia Spain - a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees - at least six different shrimp dishes - my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp - HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans - large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee - the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or icecream. As if all this food weren't enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $ 6 more ($ 3 each)

Chez Josephine on 42nd and Ninth Avenue is a great place to go for a celebration - the food's good, reasonably priced, it's fun and the staff always makes you feel important - even when it's not your birthday.

If it's within your budget, a carriage ride through Central Park would be lovely.

(if you are eating dinner near the Park the carriage will pick you up or drop you off at the restaurant - nice suprise)

Does she have a sweet tooth - there is a dessert only restaurant in the East Village - $ 12 for a 3-course dinner
(not for your anniversary - for another night)

It depends what type of food and ambience you are looking for, since the choices are almost ENDLESS. Are you guys adventurous eaters, do you like ethnic foods? What kind of budget are you on, because expensive can be really expensive and not expensive may be very inexpensive?

River Cafe in Brooklyn and One if By Land, Two if By Sea in downtown are pretty consistently rated among the most romantic restaurants in NYC, but they are very old school feeling. There are steakhouses (Peter Lugars in Brooklyn, CraftSteak)

There are tons of gourmet chefs in NYC that have places also (WD-50, Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, Bouley, Danube). Or you might want to try L'ecole, the restaurant, which is the restaurant for the students of the French Culinary Institute.

OMG! i just came back like 3 days ago....

first of all....Washington has major PMSing weather...so be ready for it to be freezing..then 80 degrees, then pouring rain within an hour^^

be comfortable too, cause youll be walking everywhere and stuff

just layer up, and have jackets with you but anything else, just go with your normal style^^like things you would wear to school

im sure you will get to go shopping at places in newyork, we raided a quicksilver and everyone got like 3 new things to wear so there are always new chances to get new clothes

if your going to a play,..plz wear comfortable shoes..not 3 inch heels like i did which where a death trap.... but if you want to go ahead^^
just dont overdress...you will feel weird....stay around neutral

um lets see, dont have a huge jacket..big problemo and pain to carry around...

bring a water proof jacket, like a fashionable snow jacket...scarves where on everyone so bring those^^...and boooottss...gloves too....sunglasses and hats

accesorize mostly with those and not too much jewlery...DX
i lost my earings and fav bracelet in a hotel...

but bring skinnies, t-shirts...or what ever you want, it all depends on your comfort^^

have fun like i did!!! its beatiful in dc,

(i recommend looking around for stands that sell cherry blossom soap-dont ask but its the best smelling soap EVER!!!-in a grey box with a pink picture on the lid^^)

BIG TIP...ALOT of us died of dehydration..be smart and have water or youll pass out...not even kidding....

It probably will not be hot in either location with all the cold below average weather htey are evperiencing. The weather is basically the same in both washingtion and NYC so you will need to carry similar things. A heavy coat, if its a cold night; a sweat shirt, for the day; long pants; short sleeves, for the 60 degree days; long sleeves; just incase; and really good shoes for walking.

also bring some nice cloths if you are going some where fancy.

Typically temperatures in washingtion and NYC are in the upper 50s and low 60s at this time of the year during the day, and in the upper 40s during the night, but next week will be in the low to mid 50s during the day and the low to mid 40s at night.

good luck

DC in the spring is beautiful, but the weather can be variable (in the summer it's just hot and humid). Think layers, because mornings and evenings are usually cool, but during the middle of the day it warms up. An umbrella or lightweight raincoat is also a good idea. It's nearly time for the cherry trees along the tidal basin to bloom--hope you get to see that.

Just before you leave, check the weather for Washington, DC online--that'll give you a better idea.

Hilton Union Square at 333 O'Farrell, much better location nears lots of shops, restaurants and entertainment.

The Hilton at 750 Kearny is one of the UGLIEST buildings in SF though its location is closer to the Financial District most of the restaurants nearby close early and there are few entertainment options.

Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa (50 miles N of SF) if you like Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, etc. Lot's of fun and they even have a mural from a nursery that Mr. Schulz painted for one of his kids. Subsequent owners of the house painted over the mural (yikes!) not realizing the significance, but it was restored by hand (rubbing off the old paint with cotton balls and rubbing alcohol) and it is a joy to see. Free parking too (unlike in SF).

Don't go anywhere near Fisherman's Wharf. As I'm sure you already know, it's a tourist trap which wastes your time and money.

Try going to a science museum in San Francisco like the Exploratorium or the California Academy of Sciences. You can also go to Yerba Buena Center (there's a BART stop) and to the Zeum, which is a really fun museum where you can do things like make your own music video or do 3-D animation. There's also a cool playground (even though you're teenagers, it is still incredibly fun) there. Zeum is kinda geared towards littler kids, but my friends and I go there all the time and we have a blast!

Good luck!

If you don't mind hanging out with an adult there are a number of good gun ranges around the Bay Area. I like Jackson Arms in South San Francisco. You can ride horses on the beach in Half Moon Bay (Sea Horse Ranch). There's all sorts of hiking in Tilden Regional Park and Redwood Region Park in the Oakland Hills. Explore the tidepools down at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach.

Monica, have you tried the YMCA, they also have dormitories available for backpackers. There are two locations in Manhattan, where you can contact them and inquire about dorm rental for NYS resident.

Vanderbilt YMCA
224 East 47th St.
New York, NY 10017
(212) 912-2500

West Side YMCA
5 West 63rd St.
New York, NY 10023
(212) 875-4100

I hope this information is very helpful.

Good luck

Try the beaches of Bodega Bay just north of San Francisco. The beaches are close and you take Highway One the whole way there. Highway One is a great drive and soooo beautiful. My favorite beach there is Salmon Creek. The beach meets up to a small river which is usually warm and you can swim in it. It is also a great place to learn to surf. There are great sand hills which are fun to slide down. While in Bodega Bay stop at one of the great gift shops to find local art, salt water taffy, and a kite to fly on the beach. Also you have to go to the Sand Piper Restaurant to eat. The food is excellent and not too spendy. The beaches in Bodega Bay are a lot less crowded and touristy than the ones closer to San Francisco. Try them out. You will not regret it!

Ocean Beach is in San Francisco at the coast but for surfing you should head to Pescadero Beach south of Half Moon Bay down Hwy 1. They have surfing trials at Half Moon Bay. But Santa Cruz which is 90 miles south is the place to go. There is a surfing museum there.

Stinson beach north of the Golden Gate is great for surfing(bring a skinsuit as the water is cold). It is close to Muir beach, Muir woods, and a real nice English pub too. I think it is the nicest beach near San Francisco.

There's racism everywhere in the world and Singapore is no exception.

As a tourist to Japan, you won't run into much problems with people trying to assist you if you have a question to ask. The train system usually has English signs and announcements around.

I guess if you wanted to use English all the time then go to Singapore.

When you have something to buy most times there's no talking really involve, other then seeing the price on the register and paying. How many times do you talk to the grocery store clerk at home? Show up at desk, give item, item is scanned, see price, and pay.

Write down what you would like to see in Singapore then write down what you would like to see in Japan, you'll probably find more of what you'll like to do in Japan, simply because Japan is a larger country, the population of Tokyo is more then of Singapore.

Not withstanding, many connection flights don't have long layovers, mostly 6-14 hours. Barely enough to see or do anything, unless you specifically tell the airline you want to stay in either country for a few days, then usually they jack up the price of your airline ticket, if you miss your flight you still pay a large penalty for re-ticketing. So keep that in mind.

if you would have more time, i suggest japan, particularly tokyo. much more interesting, culturally there. racism should be the least of your concerns in both countries. for a shorter visit, singapore would be enough: food tripping there is a must. japan, even tokyo, is just too big for, say a day tour. either way, make the most out of your visit as much as possible. enjoy!

I don't think there is such a site...well I'm sure there is one but it's probably a scam. To get good prices you'll want to try going last minute or just exploring different sites. You might want to try getting on mailing lists for cheap tickets, which certain sites have. Good luck!

well
I can suggest you few famous travel sites.
But try to become flexible on date and Time. Here, you can compare and search flights.
Try Cheap flights, Kayak and Southall Travel etc.

I would say Japan because it's more unique and ditanct, Singapore is just another modern city. I don't think there's any racism in Japan considering all the connections between Japan and the rest of the world.

For just about ANY major city, you need to spend a
bare minimum of 3-4 days to get a good feel for it.
Even that is extremely superficial, as you can just
take in a few of the famous buildings, museums, and
whatever else tourists visit.
Less than that, and you will really just skim the surface.

Then it comes down to, "How much time and money
do you have and what do you want to see ?".

You could spend the rest of your life in New York,
and still not see "everything". In Washington and
Boston, there isn't quite as much, but enough to
keep someone busy for weeks, if not months.

2 days in Washington (check out the Smithsonian museums, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Washington Monument, the National Zoo and subway it over to Arlington National Cemetery)

3 days in New York (TOO MUCH here in various places...Times Square, Statue Of Liberty, Empire State Building...the "waterfalls" exhibit going on....plenty more!)

2 days in Boston (downtown area, Cambridge/Harvard)

One week should do it!

You could probably do each city in 1 day, although for NYC i would advise 2.

Start in boston 1 day, 2 days in NYC, and the final day in Washington.

4 days is better.

well really you could spend just months in New York City itself, but if your looking into travel for a short amount of time it depends. If you wanna spend a little bit of time in one place and enjoy your time i would say about 2 weeks,or a little more. But if you just want a short trip to see the places, about 1 week, maybe a little more, Its very hard to decide its all up to how long your looking into, making it work.
But you'll have fun! Especially in New York :)

There aren't any nonstop flights on SFO to Sofia or any airports in Bulgaria currently offered.

The fastest scheduled connection in June, for example, is 13 hrs. and 50 mins. with Lufthansa connecting at Frankfurt, onward to Sofia. Connecting via Amsterdam is scheduled for 15 hrs., 20 mins.

NYC is a really big place and there is ALOT to do, it sepends what you are planning on doing... i would suggest giving yourself 3 days for shopping, 3/4 days for Sightseeing

Boston isnt as big and there isnt as much shops, You could probbably get most things done in 5 days

DC is also not as big as nyc but there is alot to do, probbably about 5/6 days there would do

Well you need at least 3 days in NYC, 2 days in Boston and 2 Days in DC... of course more would be better but in my opinion this is the minimum number of days to spend in each.

I can spend a week alone in Washington DC! I would definetly say about a good three weeks for everything. There is so much to see in NYC and Washington DC, and then you've got the Boston Aquarium and everything else! That would be such a blast, have fun!
